Four narrators lend their talents to a love story that spans decades. Leanne Woodward portrays stoic Chloe, a young librarian who is struggling to raise three younger siblings. When she stumbles upon an old book with intriguing marginalia, she strives to uncover the developing love story with the help of Joe Zack, a suave flirt portrayed by Joe Jameson, who makes him completely likable. Bob Ball portrays the curmudgeonly neighbor, Jasper, who may have answers to the story's mysteries. Ball takes Jasper from young and hopeful to old and bitter, all the while portraying him with empathy. Aven Shore depicts independent Catherine, one of the authors of the margin notes, who was asked to make impossible decisions in the 1960s. L.M.G. © AudioFile 2024, Portland, Maine -

A story of two young loves spanning 60 years comes to life in this charming tale with a mysterious spin. When Chloe, a librarian trying to make ends meet and keep her family above water, comes across a rare book from the 1960s, she wonders if she can sell it and use the proceeds to change her run of bad luck. Then, however, her cranky neighbor Jasper, discovers this book and offers a handsome sum for it. Upon further examination, Chloe sees that the book's margins are filled with a romantic conversation between two unknown lovers. When another similar book turns up, Chloe embarks on a quest to discover who these lovers might be. The audio is presented by four narrators who help to differentiate the characters in this time-jumping story. Leanne Woodward and Joe Jameson provide heartfelt readings of Chloe and her friend, Zack, who has agreed to help unravel the mystery. Meanwhile, Aven Shore and Joe Jameson offer pitch-perfect renderings of the 1960s couple, capturing their manner and cadence in a way that evokes a period film. VERDICT Gilmore's (The Lonely Hearts Book Club) romantic tale is recommended for fans of bookish listens with a twist.--BreAnn Weeks
