      Suman's first book to be translated into English tells the tale of the end of an era, the last days of the Ottoman Empire, through the lens of various people who called it home. The titular character is a girl who saw Smyrna burn when she was seventeen and relates some of the events as one who will live decades after this loss. A spy for Britain, family secrets, and matters great and small all play their part. The figures the book follows come from different walks of life and represent various peoples who called the empire home--Greek, Armenian, Turkish, and Levantine. G�ksel's translation preserves the lyrical quality of the descriptions that bring the city and cast fully to life. The city, in all its sights, sounds, and smells, is a vibrant character in its own right. This is vital history told through the lives of those closest to events, even if they aren't the traditional actors studied. Recommended for anyone interested in ordinary backgrounds of important players and how ordinary people endure and shape important events.
